Proposed Northwest B.C. LNG facility signs major long-term export deal with German energy company<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Published 1:41 pm Wednesday, July 29, 2026 Ksi Lisims LNG has signed a major long-term sale and purchase agreement with another German energy company. The deal, announced by Ksi Lisims and Uniper on July 29, would see the Dusseldorf-based European energy supplier purchase two million tonnes per year (Mtpa) of liquefied natural gas from the proposed floating facility north of Prince Rupert. \u201cThis milestone marks the first major long-term LNG supply agreement between Canada and Germany and represents a significant step in strengthening the strategic energy partnership between both countries,\u201d stated a joint press release. The project received its environmental assessment certificate from the Province in September 2025 and was later designated a priority project by the federal government\u2019s major projects office and it has a memorandum of understanding with BC Hydro for 600 MWA of power from the Northwest Transmission Line expansion, but is still awaiting a final investment decision. The deal with Unifor could go a long way to securing a final investment decision as previous deals with Shell, Total\u00c9nergies, and Germany\u2019s SEFE bring the total contracted capacity to 7 Mtpa of a projected 12 Mtpa total capacity. The backers of the project, including Houston, TX-based Western LNG are looking for a commitment of 80 to 90 per cent of capacity (around 9 \u2013 10 Mtpa) for a final investment decision. \u201cThe LNG sales agreement that we have entered into today with Uniper is our first with a European utility, and the beginning of an important long-term relationship between our companies,\u201d said Davis Thames, president and CEO of Western LNG. \u201cCanada is naturally endowed with a world class natural gas resource, which, through responsible development, is one of the lowest emissions production complexes in the world. Paired with an abundant hydro resource, Ksi Lisims LNG will be one of the lowest emissions sources of LNG in the world. We look forward to commercializing the rest of the project so that we can move into construction shortly.\u201d Nisga\u2019a Nation president Eva Clayton said the deal is consistent with her Nation\u2019s \u201cSince time immemorial, the Nisga\u2019a people have adhered to the concept of a Common Bowl,\u201d she said. \u201cThis foundational idea teaches that we are all interdependent, and directs us to share our abundance with others. Today, that same spirit of sharing has led us to pursue LNG exports on the global stage. We are proud that this agreement with Uniper reflects the Common Bowl philosophy, and we are grateful to see governments on both sides working together to make it possible.\u201d Government officials from both Canada and Germany spoke about how the agreement strengthens national resilience through diversification of trade partnerships. The Ksi Lisims facility would be supplied by the Prince Rupert Gas Transmission (PRGT) pipeline, also a partnership between the Nisga\u2019a Nation and Western LNG. The 750-kilometre pipeline \u2212 currently under construction although also awaiting a final investment decision \u2212 is proposed to run from the northeast B.C. gas fields to the north coast near the Nisga\u2019a village of Gingolx, then underwater to the floating facility at the northern tip of Pearse Island. Although permitted and currently designated \u201csubstantially started\u201d by the B.C. government, the pipeline is facing legal challenges in the B.C.
