She had wanted to make her homemade mittens. Shockingly, says Platt, that was 45 years ago.Article contentFast forward another 20 years, when Platt’s middle daughter was dating a young man. It was getting close to Christmas, and Platt says they walked past her window, holding hands in big, bulky gloves.Article content“I thought, wouldn’t it be cute if they could actually hold hands, skin to skin in a pair of mittens? And the idea was born,” says Platt.Article content Yes, there are three mittens in Cindy Platt’s sets of smitten mittens: one for each part of the couple to have on their free hands and one for sharing as they hold hands. ContributedArticle contentCreating a designArticle contentShe then looked everywhere for a pattern with no luck. Platt even wrote to the yarn company, Patton, for suggestions, but to no avail.Article contentAfter thinking about it, Platt says she decided to try and figure it out on her own, thinking, after all, how hard could it be, really?Article content Cindy Platt came up with smittens as a way for people to hold hands while staying warm. ContributedArticle contentIt took Platt about four or five weeks of experimentation before she came up with a workable pattern. She gave her daughter and her boyfriend the pair of mittens on Christmas morning.Article contentArticle content“He was so excited, and just loved them,” recalls Platt.Article contentArticle contentTo her, it was a one-off gift, but over Christmas dinner he suggested that Platt make them and sell them.Article contentShe says she then stewed on the idea for a few months and then made 10 sets and took them to the flea market, where they sold out in about an hour.Article contentThat’s when “Are you Smitten” was born.Article content Cindy Platt has sold pairs of her smittens around the world. ContributedArticle contentGreat responseArticle contentSince then, Platt has sold her smittens via Etsy around the world, and locally at craft shows in the Maritimes.Article content“My favourite part of selling them is the expressions on people’s faces when they try them on and realize they really are hand-to-hand, skin-to-skin,” she says.Article contentAnd she loves the really great stories she gets back, too.Article content Cindy Platt ended up designing a special pattern for her smittens after searching for one with no luck. ContributedArticle contentFor example, a young man from New Brunswick ordered a pair several years ago and told her he was going to gift them to his girlfriend on Christmas Eve. Unbeknownst to her, inside the double mitten would be a small box with an engagement ring. He messaged Platt later that she had said yes.Article content“It’s the stories and the faces that keep me doing it year after year,” says Platt. “I really believe that if people held hands more often, the world would be a much nicer place.”Article content Cindy Platt was inspired to create smittens after seeing her daughter walking with her boyfriend. ContributedArticle contentAlthough Platt knits year-round, she just sells her smittens in the fall.Article contentThe future of Are you Smitten, she says, will continue as long as there are people who want to hold hands.Article contentFor those who are interested, they can be found at Are you Smitten on Facebook and Etsy under the same name.Article content

Cindy Platt of Bible Hill, N.S., is a romantic, and believes in love and holding hands on a crisp, cool walk, talking about the day, and what to have for supper.
