The company is currently selling the Model 3 and Model Y, with starting prices of US$33,000 and US$36,000, respectively.

The availability of Tesla vehicles in Uruguay could prove to be an important stepping stone toward the company’s arrival in Argentina. Specialized outlets point to two possible pathways for the cars to enter the local market.

US automakers can export up to 10,000 vehicles per year to Argentina whether gasoline-powered or electric under a preferential tariff regime that reduces the standard 35% import duty, as part of Argentina’s trade framework with the United States.

However, that quota is shared by all brands importing vehicles from North America and is allocated on a first-in, first-out (FIFO) basis. Having inventory already stocked across the Ro de la Plata could allow Tesla to move vehicles into Argentina more quickly and secure access to the reduced tariff.

Tesla vehicles could also enter Argentina under the government’s separate quota allowing 50,000 hybrid and electric vehicles to be imported with a reduced 35% tariff. That program, however, only applies to vehicles with a maximum export price of US$16,000 before shipping, insurance, and Argentine taxes.

Regardless of the route, most specialized outlets expect Tesla to make its Argentine market debut sometime in 2027.

    Cover image: Wikimedia Commons

United States electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla is taking its first concrete steps toward entering the Argentine market, with a 2027 launch in its sights.
