\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum denied accusations made by his Argentine counterpart Javier Milei about Mexico allegedly funding an \u201canti-Argentina campaign\u201d during the 2026 World Cup.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is false. There has not been any campaign against any country nor government in the world,\u201d Sheinbaum said during a press conference on Monday, after being asked about the claims.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat we have here is the opposite \u2014 a campaign orchestrated from many quarters against our government. But not us,\u201d Sheinbaum said. \u201cWe don\u2019t have the habit of meddling in other countries\u2019 affairs, and we ask for the same in return.\u201d<\/p>\n
Sheinbaum\u2019s statement adds another layer to the diplomatic crisis triggered by Milei\u2019s comments during and after his visit to Brazil over the weekend.<\/p>\n
In an interview he gave on Sunday, Milei accused Mexico, Brazil and the United States\u2019 Democratic Party of designing and funding a campaign to defame Argentina during the World Cup, which includes widespread accusations of racism and anti-sportsmanship against the players.<\/p>\n
Mexico was one of the countries that hosted the 2026 FIFA World Cup alongside the United States and Canada.<\/p>\n
\u201cDo you know who put the most money into this anti-Argentina campaign? The Brazilian government,\u201d Milei told Radio Mitre after returning from S\u00e3o Paulo on Sunday.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cTwenty-five percent of the funds came from the Brazilian government. And then they come and talk about interference,\u201d he added, without providing evidence to support the claim.<\/p>\n
He added that Mexico and U.S. Democrats had also weighed in on the supposed campaign by \u201cfunding\u201d it, and added that they are \u201cprogressive leaders who don\u2019t want the ideas of freedom to work,\u201d indicating he believes that the reason behind the supposed scheme is to go against his government.<\/p>\n
Milei and Lula Brazil decided to recall their ambassador to Buenos Aires and summoned the Argentine ambassador to Brasilia on Sunday after Milei insulted President Luiz In\u00e1cio Lula da Silva and Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes while attending a Libertarian Party convention in S\u00e3o Paulo. There, he gave a speech to express support for far-right presidential candidate Fl\u00e1vio Bolsonaro, Da Silva\u2019s rival.<\/p>\n
Lula did not directly respond to the accusations or insults. \u201cHere in Brazil, we don\u2019t accept anyone sticking their nose where it doesn\u2019t belong, because Brazil knows how to take care of itself,\u201d he said on Monday during a union event.\u00a0<\/p>\n
