Article contentArticle contentDuring lifting operations with a gantry crane, two casing joints separated from the crane\u2019s magnets while suspended approximately two metres above the pipe deck and fell to the deck below, where it struck the lower left leg of a worker who was in the area.Article contentArticle contentThe worker was transported onshore for further medical evaluation.Article contentFollowing the incident, operations in the area were suspended. The west gantry crane was removed from service and the crane manufacturer was engaged to inspect the equipment. Following inspection, no equipment deficiencies were identified, and the crane was approved for return to service.Article contentA safety stand-down was conducted to review the event and reinforce safety expectations, the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Energy Regulator said in a July 23 release.Article contentDue to the weight of the object and the distance travelled, the incident had the potential for fatality based on the Dropped Objects Prevention Scheme calculator, C-NLOER said.Article contentThere was also a potential fatality incident on the Hibernia Platform on May 12, 2026. In that incident, which was announced June 26, operations personnel were preparing to load crude to a tanker when excessive vibration and noise were reported, followed by gas detection.Article contentArticle contentThe source of the noise and vibration was determined to be the sludge pump, whose low point drain had sheared off, releasing an estimated volume of 1,576 litres of crude that was contained within the platform. The pump was isolated through manual valve closures, preventing further loss of containment.Article contentArticle contentNo one was injured in the May incident, and there was no release to sea, but the incident is classified as having potential for fire\/explosion and fatality.
