\u201cIt\u2019ll be hard to put together another team like this,\u201d Scaloni said before choking up. \u201cLosing this hurts me deep in my soul.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Albiceleste coach said he was \u201cproud of how [his team] played\u201d and that they have to \u201cgive credit\u201d to Spain for the match they played.\u00a0<\/p>\n
He insisted that they thought the team would \u201cmake it to the end\u201d after Spain scored, adding that Argentina had to go through \u201cseveral obstacles\u201d after losing several players due to fitness issues.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m very proud of everyone; I have no complaints about any of [the Argentina players],\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Asked about Messi and his potential continuity in the national team, Scaloni had nothing but praise for the Rosario player, calling him \u201cthe best football player to ever step onto a field.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u00a0\u201cLeo is 39 years old; it\u2019s incredible,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s obvious to me that he\u2019ll keep playing as long as he wants to. I hope people are proud of him and the team.\u201d<\/p>\n
However, Scaloni did cast doubts over his continuity at the helm of the Argentine national team, saying he\u2019ll have to \u201ctalk\u201d with AFA President Claudio Tapia. He did clarify that he \u201chas an idea\u201d of what he wants to do.<\/p>\n
\u201cI feel the need to think things through,\u201d he said. \u201cI don\u2019t know if something this big will ever be possible again.\u201d<\/p>\n
Scaloni said working at the national team is \u201ca dream\u201d for him and his coaching staff and that \u201ca lot of things\u201d will need to be reset to move forward.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ll have to form a squad like this, one that will likely never come together again. It hurts my soul,\u201d he said before choking up and walking away from the conference.<\/p>\n
Scaloni is under contract up until December 2026, which has led some to ponder if he\u2019ll return as Argentina head coach.<\/p>\n
