After rounding the southern tip of South America, it docked in Punta Arenas, Chile, on July 5 for resupply operations, after which news of the voyage emerged in Argentina.

The HMS Medway is the Royal Navy’s permanent patrol vessel assigned to the waters surrounding the Malvinas Islands.

Argentina filed its complaint on July 5 with the British Embassy in Buenos Aires, although the Foreign Ministry did not make it public until Wednesday night, 10 days later.

The announcement came in the aftermath of the 2026 World Cup semifinal between Argentina and England, although the ministry’s statement made no reference to the match. After the game, the Argentine players, who have moved on to the final, held a banner saying The Malvinas are Argentine.

In the statement, the ministry said the warship had carried out “unconsulted and illegal” movements toward Argentina’s continental coast.

According to the communiqu, the formal protest note, signed by Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno and delivered to the British Embassy, expressed Argentina’s “utmost rejection” of the vessel’s movements, adding that the ship “is illegally stationed at the Malvinas Islands.”

The ministry said the HMS Medway’s navigation through Argentine waters “was not adequately notified” in accordance with the bilateral agreements and declarations currently in force.

The statement added that the vessel’s transit constituted a “violation” of commitments undertaken by Argentina and the United Kingdom to establish military confidence-building measures following the 1982 Malvinas War.

You may also be interested in: Argentina-England match fuels political tensions over Malvinas in Buenos Aires

British reponse According to UK outlet The Independent, Prime Minister Keir Starmers official spokesperson claimed the trip was a planned routine logistics visit to Chile and that they had notified Argentine authorities in full compliance with international law.

“The facts here are that we have notified the Argentinian government in advance of HMS Medway taking a routine logistics visit to Chile between 5 and 8 July to support British Antarctic survey operations, which will deliver essential stores and supplies to sustain scientific research in Antarctica, the spokesperson said.

Transit from the Falkland Islands to Chile was carried out by the most direct practical route, considering operational safety and weather factors to ensure timely delivery,” he stated.

Referring to the Argentine national teams banner, the spokesperson added: The World Cup might not be ours, but the Falkland Islands definitely are.

According to Defensa.com, an outlet specializing in defense news from Spanish-speaking countries, while the HMS Medway stayed in Punta Arenas, Chile, a delegation from the UK embassy in Chile led by charg d’affaires Nick Kennedy alongside members of the embassys defense area visited the ship.

The outlet reported that the visit was part of the efforts to fortify the bilateral relationship between Chile and the United Kingdom.

Chilean authorities have not publicly addressed the accusations or the trip itself at time of publication.

Sovereignty dispute The Argentine ministry argued that the vessel’s navigation formed part of “a sustained policy of unilateral actions” by the United Kingdom that are “incompatible with United Nations resolutions and with the duty of both parties to refrain from altering the status quo while the sovereignty dispute remains unresolved.”

“Far from fostering the conditions of trust and understanding required by a mature bilateral relationship, these actions deepen tensions in the South Atlantic, disregard the repeated mandate of the international community, and hinder Argentina’s efforts to move towards a peaceful and negotiated resolution of the dispute,” the statement said.

Reaffirming Argentina’s longstanding position, the ministry concluded: “By history, by law, and by conviction, the Malvinas are Argentine.”

“The Argentine Republic reaffirms, once again, its legitimate and inalienable sovereign rights over the Malvinas Islands, South Georgia, and the South Sandwich Islands, as well as the surrounding maritime areas.”

Editorial disclaimer: Although the UK refers to the territory as the Falkland Islands, Argentina strongly contests this name.
