\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t Argentine football star Diego Maradona suffered \u201cabout 12 hours of agony before he passed,\u201d on November 25, 2020, said Carlos Casinelli, the forensic scientist who performed the autopsy on the former star\u2019s corpse.<\/p>\n
Casinelli was the key witness in Thursday\u2019s hearing on the trial over Maradona\u2019s death, which also heard testimony from two of the doctors who cared for him when he was head coach at football club Gimnasia Esgrima La Plata.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe had water everywhere,\u201d said Casinelli, adding Maradona\u2019s face, fingers and feet were swollen. \u201cIt was a generalized edema.\u201d<\/p>\n
The forensic expert accompanied his testimony with photographs from Maradona\u2019s autopsy, prompting his daughter Giannina to leave the courtroom.<\/p>\n
Casinelli said he estimated the time of his passing at \u201cbetween 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. on November 25.\u201d<\/p>\n
The specialist added the health issues that led to Maradona\u2019s death had been developing for some time, although it is \u201cimpossible to say exactly how long.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThat doesn\u2019t develop in just one or two days. This has been going on for over a week, or even 10 days.\u201d<\/p>\n
Casinelli said Maradona had cerebral edema, blood clots adhered to the heart walls, bilateral pleural effusion and other signs of prolonged agony.<\/p>\n
He concluded that the cause of death was \u201cacute pulmonary edema with chronic cardiomyopathy progressing to heart failure.\u201d<\/p>\n
Doctors After that, Flavio Tunessi, who worked as a traumatologist for Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata, the last club Maradona worked as head coach, gave his testimony.<\/p>\n
He said that upon Maradona\u2019s arrival at the club in September 2019, his entourage gave him the contact for Leopoldo Luque to call upon as the former star\u2019s lead medical advisor.<\/p>\n
Luque is one of the main accused of failing to administer proper medical care to Maradona, alongside his psychiatrist, Agustina Cosachov, and psychologist, Carlos D\u00edaz. In total, eight people stand for trial, with one, nurse Dahiana Madrid, facing a separate trial by jury at her request.<\/p>\n
He added he saw Maradona \u201cvery unwell\u201d during the celebrations for his 60th birthday \u2014 which took place less than a month before his death \u2014 and that the former star told him \u201che wanted to leave.\u201d<\/p>\n
At the request of the club\u2019s president, Tunessi said he arranged for Maradona to be admitted to the Ipensa Clinic, where he worked, for medical evaluation.<\/p>\n
Mart\u00edn Cesarini and Guillermo Burry, doctors at the clinic, were the next witnesses<\/p>\n
Cesarini, who performed the checkup, said he requested an MRI after noting \u201cMaradona\u2019s struggles to walk\u201d and \u201cfearing a blow after a fall,\u201d but that even after spotting a subdural hematoma, \u201cnone of the evidence reviewed in the study indicated that urgent action was required.\u201d<\/p>\n
Burry, neurosurgeon at Ipensa, concurred with Cesarini, saying the hematoma looked like it was chronic, that is, \u201clong-standing bleeding caused by microtrauma, not from a recent fall.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIn my opinion, it wasn\u2019t an emergency, and we needed to stabilize him first,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
