\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t Thursday saw a new hearing in the trial over the death of former Argentine football superstar Diego Maradona.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Giannina, one of Maradona\u2019s daughters with his longtime wife Claudia Villafa\u00f1e, was expected to give her testimony. However, proceedings were turned on their head when one of the main accused, the former star\u2019s primary medical adviser, Leopoldo Luque, requested to testify instead.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Judges Alberto Ortolani, Alberto Gaig, and Pablo Rol\u00f3n allowed the intervention, despite protests from the prosecution and Giannina Maradona herself, who later posted an Instagram story with the message: \u201cSe puede ser m\u00e1s cag\u00f3n?\u201d (\u201cCan you be any more of a coward?\u201d).<\/p>\n
Luque\u2019s testimony sought to cast doubt on the circumstances surrounding Maradona\u2019s condition at the time of his death and to downplay his own responsibility.\u00a0<\/p>\n
He pointed to an autopsy report stating that the cause of death was \u201cchronic heart failure\u201d that had \u201cworsened due to lack of treatment.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cFrom 2007 onwards, Diego did not receive any cardiological treatment, and at that time, the doctor treating him was [Maradona\u2019s long-time personal physician Alfredo Cahe], not me.\u201d<\/p>\n
Cahe passed away in 2024.<\/p>\n
Luque also criticized the prosecution\u2019s claim that pulmonary edema was evidence of a long agony, insisting instead that it was caused by the prolonged cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) performed on the former star.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe patient had CPR performed for at least an hour,\u201d he said, insisting the medics kept trying to revive Maradona\u2019s lifeless body \u201cat the family\u2019s request.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThey did CPR on a corpse,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n

Luque later focused on his personal relationship with the football legend, saying he bonded with the former star over a shared background story \u201cthat caught his attention.\u201d He insisted Maradona was going through \u201crelationship and family problems\u201d and was \u201cdrinking too much alcohol.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cI visited him many times as someone who loves him very much,\u201d he said. \u201cI loved Diego; he was my hero and friend.\u201d<\/p>\n
Maradona died from an acute pulmonary edema in 2020. The trial centers around the circumstances of his death and the attention he received from his doctors and nurses.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Eight people stand accused of failing to administer proper medical care to Maradona, chiefly Luque as his main medical advisor, as well as his psychiatrist, Agustina Cosachov, and psychologist, Carlos D\u00edaz.\u00a0<\/p>\n
