\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t The new trial over the death of Argentine football superstar Diego Maradona kicked off on Tuesday, with opening statements by the prosecution, the defendants and the complainants.<\/p>\n
Maradona died from an acute pulmonary edema in 2020. The trial centers around the circumstances of his death and the attention he received from his doctors and nurses.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Eight people stand accused of failing to administer proper medical care to Maradona, chiefly Maradona\u2019s main medical advisor, Leopoldo Luque, as well as his psychiatrist, Agustina Cosachov, and psychologist, Carlos D\u00edaz.\u00a0<\/p>\n
This will be the second time the proceeding goes ahead, after the first court case was declared a mistrial in May 2025.<\/p>\n
After a short debate on whether the hearings should be broadcast live \u2014 a request by the defendants\u2019 lawyers that was rejected by judges Alberto Ortolani, Alberto Gaig and Pablo Rol\u00f3n \u2014 Patricio Ferrari gave the prosecution\u2019s opening statement.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe group of amateurs I have here on my right,\u201d he said in reference to the seven accused, \u201chaving each assumed their respective roles and failed to fulfill all the duties of their positions, created a series of factors that significantly increased the risk beyond the permissible level [for Maradona].\u201d<\/p>\n
Ferrari went on to say the accused \u201cleft Diego Maradona to fend for himself, condemning him to death;\u201d that they \u201cdid nothing to avoid his passing\u201d and that \u201ctaking him to a hospital or giving him a simple diuretic would\u2019ve saved his life.\u201d<\/p>\n
Francisco Onetto and Roberto Rall\u00edn, who defend Maradona\u2019s main medical advisor Luque, insisted that \u201cDiego wouldn\u2019t want Luque sentenced if he was alive\u201d and said the neurosurgeon \u201cisn\u2019t a murderer but a good man.\u201d<\/p>\n
They argued Luque \u201cwasn\u2019t in charge of Maradona\u2019s health\u201d and insisted the case \u201cwould\u2019ve been dropped if it wasn\u2019t about Diego Armando Maradona.\u201d<\/p>\n
Vadim Mischanchuk, lawyer to Maradona\u2019s psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov, said \u201cMaradona was in charge of his own health and that he \u201cmade the decisions\u2014some right, some wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThe defense will prove that, unfortunately, Mr. Maradona\u2019s death was due to a progressive deterioration of his health, which eventually reached a breaking point,\u201d he argued.<\/p>\n
For his part, Fernando Burlando, who represents Maradona\u2019s two daughters with long-time wife Claudia Villafa\u00f1e, Dalma and Giannina, insisted the former star had been \u201cmurdered,\u201d as he had been taken to a \u201chome care\u201d where \u201cthere wasn\u2019t even a band-aid\u201d shortly after recovering from a surgery to remove a subdural hematoma, on November 3.<\/p>\n
Around 100 witnesses are expected to give their testimony in the trial, dropping from the over 200 listed for the original trial.<\/p>\n
