It insisted it, along with the AFA, “consistently reiterated their desire to hold the Finalissima on neutral ground […] after UEFA repeatedly insisted that the match be played in Madrid” as “the proposal to hold a single match in Madrid would violate the principle of sporting fairness.”

The AFA released a very similar statement, after which President Claudio “Chiqui” Tapia took to his X account to add to it.

In a five-part post, Tapia added the AFA “learned of the idea to play in Madrid via the media,” and then “accepted to play the match in Italy, with the condition it was played on the 31st.”

An AFA’s spokesperson told the Herald the request had to do with “adding training dates” to make “better use of the international break,” after Argentina’s friendly with Qatar, originally scheduled for that date, was also cancelled.

What is the Finalissima? The tournament, sometimes called the CONMEBOL–UEFA Cup of Champions, sees the South American and European continental champions face off in a single match.

The 2026 matchup had generated great anticipation, as 2024 Copa America winners Argentina and 2024 European Championship champions Spain are among the biggest candidates to win this year’s World Cup.

It was initially expected to be played between June and July 2025, but it was postponed several times as both teams already had competitions scheduled.

The tournament was first conceived in 1985 and named the Artemio Franchi Cup after the former president of UEFA. France won the inaugural tournament, but the competition wasn’t played again until 1993.

Argentina, led by Diego Maradona, took the title, beating the Danish team that surprisingly won the 1992 European Championship.

The defending champions had to wait almost 30 years to repeat the feat when the competition was brought back and rebranded as Finalissima in 2022.
