Here’s where to be and when.

Annie Ernaux’s ‘Super 8 Years’ at Museo del Cine March 14, 6 p.m.
Buenos Aires Film Museum;

As part of its Portraits from France series, the Buenos Aires Film Museum will screen Annie Ernaux and David Ernaux-Briot’s Les Années Super 8, which premiered in the Cannes Film Festival in 2022.

In the film, the Nobel Prize in Literature winner shares, describes, and narrates her family recordings, filmed between 1972 and 1981 in Super 8mm. Silent images combine family intimacy and travel diary in a turbulent time: that of France after its May, Chile after the coup, and the Soviet Union before its dissolution. “While reviewing our Super 8 films shot between 1972 and 1981, I realized that they not only constituted a family archive, but also a testament to the tastes, pastimes, lifestyle, and aspirations of a social class during the decade after 1968,” said Ernaux.

The screening, supported by the Institute Français d’Argentine and the French Embassy, will also include a draw of Annie Ernaux books, courtesy of Céspedes Libros.

Hot Air Balloons Festival March 28, 3 pm to 10 p.m.
Parque de la Ciudad, Puerta 7 (Av. Roca 4099)
Tickets available online

The skies above Parque de la Ciudad are about to get a lot more colorful. Buenos Aires Flota brings what organizers are billing as a unique hot air balloon festival in South America, with a full day of aerial displays, live music, circus performers, artisan stalls, food trucks, and a beer garden.

Balloons will be inflated at 5 p.m.. While visitors won’t be able to ride the balloons — tethered flights are on offer but free ascents are not permitted for safety reasons — the real showstopper comes after dark: the Night Glow, a synchronized light and fire show in which the balloons illuminate the night sky in time with music, at 7 p.m.

A word of warning: the event is weather-dependent, and strong winds are as likely to cause a postponement as rain (alternative dates are March 29, April 11 and April 12.)

Festival Carne! March 14 and 15, from noon to midnight
Hipódromo de Palermo (Av. del Libertador 4101)
Free admission

For anyone who takes their asado seriously, Festival Carne! returns to the Hipódromo de Palermo for a two-day celebration of live-fire cooking in all its forms. Thirty-five stands and food trucks bring together some of the city’s best parrilleros, showcasing a range of grilling traditions — from asador criollo and traditional parrillas to kamados, smokers, fogoneros, and cages.

The meat on offer runs the full Argentine spectrum: beef, pork, lamb, achuras, and chorizos, with picadas, disco cooking, wines, craft beers, ice cream, and desserts rounding things out. Whether you’re coming for lunch, dinner, or an afternoon snack, there’s plenty to keep you busy across both days.

    Buenos Aires Cumbia March 14
Hipódromo de Palermo
General admission AR$33,000, VIP Pass AR$75,000. Tickets available online.

Since its debut at the Hipódromo de Palermo in December 2021, Buenos Aires Cumbia has grown into one of the country’s most iconic cumbia festivals, drawing crowds as diverse as the genre itself. This year’s line up at Obras Stadium brings together LBC and Euge Quevedo, Cacho Deicas, Amar Azul, and Los del Fuego, with DJs keeping things going until dawn.
