Since Monday, Buenos Aires City has been under an orange alert for extreme heat, the second highest alert possible.

December 31 is forecast to be the hottest day of the year, with temperatures expected to reach 38°C. No rain is forecast, and the clear skies of recent days are set to continue.

The National Meteorological Service has confirmed it’s not technically a heat-wave, which would require the scorching temperatures to continue for at least three days. Still, the orange alert is not one to ignore: it’s only issued when temperatures can have “moderate to high” effects on human health. It can be very dangerous, especially for at-risk groups.

Buenos Aires won’t be the only part of Argentina feeling the heat. Areas in the provinces of Córdoba, Entre Ríos, western Buenos Aires, Santa Fe, and La Pampa are also on alert for high temperatures, although they’re only subject to a yellow alert, one step below the warning for the capital.

Protecting yourself from the heat on New Year’s Eve Temperatures are expected to remain in the low 30s well after dark and even around midnight, so pay particular attention during your end-of-year parties. If you’re spending New Year’s Eve in Buenos Aires, here are some tips to avoid heat-related health problems.

Drink water regularly, without waiting until you’re thirsty. Avoid excessive or unnecessary exposure to sunlight, especially during peak hours (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) Keep an eye on kids, pregnant women, the elderly, and those with health conditions Avoid heavily caffeinated, alcoholic or high-sugar drinks where possible Avoid calorie-dense foods. Reduce unnecessary physical activity Wear light, light-colored, cool clothes Stay in ventilated or air conditioned spaces If you or anyone you know starts to experience symptoms such as intense thirst, dry mouth, excessive sweating, a sensation of “suffocation” from the heat, dry skin, exhaustion, dizziness, fainting, stomach pains, lack of appetite, nausea, vomiting or headaches, seek medical assistance immediately. Move the person to a cool, quiet place and try to cool them down, wet their clothes, and give them cool water.

When will the temperatures drop in Buenos Aires? New Year’s day will bring much needed relief for the Argentine capital. Temperatures are forecast to fall as 2026 rolls around, with temperatures dropping to lows of 21°C and highs of 30°C.

On Friday, January 2, and Saturday, January 3, highs will remain between 28°C and 31°C, with lows ranging from 18°C to 22°C. However, there is currently no rain forecast through the end of the week.

Buenos Aires’s New Year’s Eve celebrations will take place in top temperatures, the Argentine weather service has warned.
