{"id":12163,"date":"2025-11-21T10:31:00","date_gmt":"2025-11-21T13:31:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/service.codeus.ca\/index.php\/2025\/11\/21\/judge-rules-trumps-dc-troop-deployment-illegal-halting-national-guard-presence\/"},"modified":"2025-11-21T10:31:00","modified_gmt":"2025-11-21T13:31:00","slug":"judge-rules-trumps-dc-troop-deployment-illegal-halting-national-guard-presence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/service.codeus.ca\/index.php\/2025\/11\/21\/judge-rules-trumps-dc-troop-deployment-illegal-halting-national-guard-presence\/","title":{"rendered":"Judge rules Trump&#8217;s DC troop deployment illegal &#8230; halting National Guard presence"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"js-article-text\">\n<p>By <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/profile-708\/katelyn-caralle.html\">KATELYN CARALLE, SENIOR U.S. POLITICAL REPORTER<\/a> <\/p>\n<p><span> <span>Published:<\/span> <time datetime=\"2025-11-20T20:34:56+0000\"> 15:34 EST, 20 November 2025 <\/time> <\/span> | <span> <span>Updated:<\/span> <time datetime=\"2025-11-21T13:31:58+0000\"> 08:31 EST, 21 November 2025 <\/time> <\/span> <\/p>\n<div itemprop=\"articleBody\">\n<p>The ongoing National Guard deployment in Washington, <a target=\"_self\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/washington-dc\/index.html\" id=\"mol-5e7589d0-c650-11f0-aff3-530de59aa036\">DC<\/a> is illegal, a district judge ruled on Thursday in a continuation of the war between <a target=\"_self\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/donald_trump\/index.html\" id=\"mol-5e54bb60-c650-11f0-aff3-530de59aa036\">Donald Trump<\/a> and the judicial system.<\/p>\n<p>Troops were first deployed to the nation&#8217;s capital on August 11, 2025 as the president sought to crackdown on rising violent <a target=\"_self\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/crime\/index.html\" id=\"mol-5e7d2af0-c650-11f0-aff3-530de59aa036\">crime<\/a> in the District of Columbia.<\/p>\n<p>Now more than three months later, the issue is still being fought in the courts.<\/p>\n<p>Judge Jia Michelle Cobb of the District Court for DC ruled that the Trump administration violated DC&#8217;s Home Rule Act by deploying units for non-military crime deterrence operations.<\/p>\n<p>Her ruling handed down on Thursday placed a 21 day stay on the order, allowing for continued troop presence until December 11, 2025. Meaning if enforced, troops could be home with 14 days left until <a target=\"_self\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/christmas\/index.html\" id=\"mol-b1b8d890-c650-11f0-aff3-530de59aa036\">Christmas<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This period also allows for President Trump to appeal the decision.<\/p>\n<p>The White House reiterated when reached by the Daily Mail for comment that &#8216;Trump is well within his lawful authority to deploy the National Guard in Washington D.C. to protect federal assets and assist law enforcement with specific tasks.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;This lawsuit is nothing more than another attempt  at the detriment of DC residents  to undermine the President&#8217;s highly successful operations to stop violent crime in DC,&#8217; said White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson in a statement.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>A district judge ruled on Thursday, November 20, 2025 that Trump can no longer keep National Guard troops in Washington DC for crime-deterrence operations<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Trump signed an executive order in August declaring a crime emergency in Washington, DC that ordered thousands of National Guard troops from eight states and the District to deploy and patrol the city&#8217;s streets<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Cobb wrote in her decision that Trump&#8217;s takeover in DC illegally intrudes on local officials&#8217; authority to direct law enforcement activity and said it violated the Constitution.<\/p>\n<p>She said the president cannot call up the National Guard into DC or any other state for &#8216;whatever reason [he] sees fit.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>DC Attorney General Brian Schwalb sued to challenge the Guard deployments and asked for the White House to be barred from deploying troops to the District without the mayor&#8217;s consent.<\/p>\n<p>Trump declared via executive order in August a crime emergency in Washington, DC.<\/p>\n<p>He sent 2,300 National Guard troops from eight different states and DC to patrol the streets under the command of the Secretary of the Army.<\/p>\n<p>He also deployed hundreds of federal agencies from a handful of agencies  FBI, ATF, DEA, HSI  to assist with the 24\/7 patrols.<\/p>\n<p>But DC wasn&#8217;t the only target.Other cities faced Trump&#8217;s takeover dreams  but only one was successful so far.<\/p>\n<p>Troops are still in Memphis, Tennessee, but courts in Portland, Oregon and Chicago, Illinois were able to block long-term deployments in their respective cities.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>When entering cold months, military officials told leaders to prepare for &#8216;winterization&#8217; for their troops  signaling there is no end in sight for the deployment<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>                                                                                                                                  <ad-slot position=\"smart_feed\"><\/ad-slot>                                                                <ad-slot position=\"after_article\"><\/ad-slot>                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        <\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By KATELYN CARALLE, SENIOR U.S. POLITICAL REPORTER Published: 15:34 EST, 20 November 2025 | Updated: 08:31 EST, 21 November 2025 The ongoing National Guard deployment in Washington, DC is illegal, a district judge ruled on Thursday in a continuation of the war between Donald Trump and the judicial system.
