The Charlottetown Rural Raiders prevailed in a five-set thriller against the Colonel Gray Colonels in an all-Charlottetown clash on Nov. 15.Article contentArticle content“It was definitely an awesome game for the finals,” said Raiders head coach Catherine Callaghan. “Hard to believe, honestly, it ended that way, but I think it’ll make for an even more memorable match for the girls to look back on.”Article contentArticle contentAll five sets were closely contested at Holland College’s MacMillan Centre for Community Engagement in Charlottetown. Scores were 25-19, 19-25, 22-25, 25-23, 18-6 as the Raiders capped an 11-0 (won-lost) undefeated season in league regular-season and playoff action.Article content“It feels really good (to win the provincial championship),” said Charlottetown Rural senior libero Paige Vokey. “We lost the past two years in pretty close battles with Bluefield, so it felt really good. We worked really hard for it, so it was nice to feel like our hard work paid off.”Article contentVokey called the final the closest match she has played in.Article content“The last two years, and especially last year with Bluefield, it was pretty tight, but I don’t think we ever got that tight (like this year),” said Vokey, who was named the MVP of the provincial championship.Article contentSteady playArticle contentCallaghan called Vokey “a rock” with the Raiders.Article contentArticle content“Sometimes the liberos go unnoticed, but she definitely kept our back row super steady,” said Callaghan. “I think that’s where a lot of the magic happens being able to set up your team for offence. Just being super confident on service receive, and having someone that you can always look to.”Article contentArticle contentVokey, who previously played the left-side position, only started playing libero at the start of Grade 11.Article content“You’re basically only playing in the back court, so you’re only doing serve receive and defence,” said Vokey in describing a libero’s role. “Your only goal is to get the ball up and to the setter, so then the other players can hit it. You’re really just there to control, the back court.”Article contentSetter Ella McEntee was named the Raiders’ player of the match in the final.Article content“She did a super good job that (match) of set location, keeping our offence fast and mixing in a lot of different players, and she even had some amazing defensive plays,” said Callaghan.

The Charlottetown Rural Raiders pulled out a 3-2 victory over the Colonel Gray Colonels in the championship match of the P.E.I.
